The Diptychs explore narratives of human interaction, ranging from moments of intimacy and personal connection to scenes of public gathering and collective engagement. The works begin with photographs collected from newspapers, which I adhere to wood panels as source material.
I then obscure the photographic backgrounds by painting over them in black, isolating the figures from their original contexts. This process removes much of the visual information surrounding the subjects while leaving their gestures, expressions, and interactions available for interpretation. I subsequently pair the panels according to their narrative potential, allowing relationships to emerge between otherwise unrelated images.
Although each pairing evokes a particular narrative for me, the works are intentionally open-ended. The viewer becomes an active participant in constructing meaning, bringing their own experiences, associations, and interpretations to the relationships between the figures. In this way, the Diptychs function as fragmented narratives whose meanings remain fluid and are continually reimagined through the act of viewing.
